Step by Step Process

Once you have determined that you are eligible to study abroad and you are aware of the academic requirements, you can begin the process.
 

  1. Schedule an appointment with the Director of Study Abroad. Your initial appointment with the Director should last about a half an hour. In this meeting you should be prepared to give the Director some ideas of where you wish to study, the types of courses you would like to take, and when you are interested in studying abroad (summer or semester and year of study). The Director will review the types of study abroad programs offered and give you suggestions on ones that might work for you.
     
  2. Meet with your academic advisor. Tell your academic advisor that you are interested in studying abroad. Together you can work on your future course schedules to make sure a semester or summer away will not interfere with major or minor requirements. Some majors have more flexibility than others in terms of when a student can study abroad. Your academic advisor is the best resource for helping you to determine which semester or summer term works best with your academic schedule.
     
  3. Apply for your passport. It can take eight weeks to have your passport processed, so the sooner you apply, the better. Remember, passports are valid for 10 years, so you can never apply too early! If you currently have a passport make sure it is valid. Most countries require that your passport is valid for six months after your program ends. Also, keep in mind that many countries require students to obtain a student visa. A visa is a travel document used in conjunction with the passport and you cannot apply for a visa without having a passport. Your study abroad program will inform you of the need for a visa and will send you information on how to apply for the visa. Visa processing times vary from country to country and consulate to consulate, so advanced planning is imperative.
     
  4. Research program options. The Director of Study Abroad can provide you with literature as well as websites to help you with your search for the perfect program. 
     
  5. Complete the Felician College Intent to Study Abroad form. This form is available in the Study Abroad Office and informs the Director that you plan to apply to study abroad in a certain term. Form deadlines: Summer Study Abroad - March 1; Fall Study Abroad - March 15; Spring Study Abroad - October 1. If any of these dates should fall on a weekend, the form will be due the following Monday. 

    Students interested in participating in a Felician College Faculty-Led study abroad program will need to complete a special application, which is reviewed on a rolling basis the semester prior to the pre-departure course.
     

  6. Submit the host program's application. Each program has its own application requirements, procedures and deadlines. Many programs operate on rolling admissions, so it is best to submit your application before the stated deadline. Make sure to follow the instructions carefully and see the Director of Study Abroad if you need assistance.
     
  7. Complete the Application for Study Abroad Transfer Credit. When you receive your acceptance letter from the program in which you wish to participate, please inform the Director of Study Abroad of your plans. You will be required to complete the Application for Study Abroad Transfer Credit. This form ensures that the courses you take abroad will be transferred to Felician College. Applications for Study Abroad Transfer Credit must be completed and submitted to the Registrar's Office by the following deadlines: Summer Study Abroad - May 1; Fall Study Abroad - May 1; Spring Study Abroad - November 15. If any of these dates should fall on a weekend, the application will be due the following Monday.
     
  8. Attend a Mandatory Pre-departure Orientation. During this session you will be given multiple mandatory forms to complete, including a comprehensive waiver form, and a Study Abroad Emergency Contacts, and Health and Insurance Questionnaire. Please see the Study Abroad Office for details.
